Was the T-62 A good tank?

The T-62 Main Battle Tank (MBT) was the last in a series of excellent Soviet tank designs that began with the T-34 in the late 1930s. The T-62 MBT signaled the end of the class of heavy tanks worldwide. As heavily armed and gunned as the heavy tank but far lighter and more mobile, the MBT now reigned supreme.

Is T-62 obsolete?

T-62 production was maintained at Uralvagonzavod until 1973 when it was replaced on the production lines by the T-72. Czechoslovakia built more than 1,500 T-62 main battle tanks for export after production ceased in the Soviet Union in 1975, and it continued there until 1978.

Why did the Soviet Union use the T-62 tank?

While the T-62 became the standard tank in the Soviet arsenal, it did not fully replace the T-55 in export markets due to its higher manufacturing costs and maintenance requirements compared to its predecessor.

What kind of armour did the T-62 have?

The turret had three-layer armour with an overall thickness of 185 mm to 240 mm. It was armed with the same D-54TS tank gun as Kartsev’s Ob’yekt 140. In 1957 Uralvagonzavod built two Ob’yekt 140 prototypes which were put on trials soon after.

Who are the crew of a T 62 tank?

The T-62 has a typical tank layout: driver’s compartment at the front, fighting compartment in the centre and engine compartment in the rear. The four-man crew consists of the commander, driver, gunner and loader. Although the T-62 is very similar to the T-55 and makes use of many of the same parts, there are some differences.

Is the T-55 the same as the T 62?

Although the T-62 was considered a new tank as it was taken into service, most of its parts were standardized with the T-55 and crew training for these two tanks were so similar that practically no transitional training was required for a T-55 crew member to transfer to a T-62.
