Swimming is not permitted at Hinze Dam.

The land on which Hinze Dam was built was first settled in the 1880s by Carl and Johanna Hinze after they immigrated to Australia from Germany. Grandson Cecil said he remembers how his father Otto would tell the family their land would make an ideal site for a dam.

Hinze Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with an un- gated spillway. This means when water reaches the level of the spillway, water flows over the spillway and into the Nerang River. If the dam water level continues to rise another 5.8 metres, the water flows over both the upper and lower spillways.

When did Hinze Dam join the sips scheme?
In 2017/18 1,000 Mary River cod and 53,371 Australian bass were stocked from SIPS permit sales. The dam joined the SIPS scheme in 2016 but was previously stocked from a previous fishing permit scheme operated at Hinze Dam only.
