2014 Kume Island Sugar Ride
Every year Kume Island hosts a large group of cycling enthusiasts from around Japan and the world. The Sugar Ride cycling event is a non-competitive ride around scenic Kume Island. It is a great way for cyclists to meet others and enjoy a ride together. All the courses have various stops for rest and refreshment.
This year there were three options for participants, including 45, 90, and 130km. The longest “Challenge Course” included three rings around the island and gives the participant the best introduction to the many scenic spots here.
One spot that most visitors don’t get to see is inside the Japan Self Defense force base on the top of Gushikawa Mountain (aka “Habu Hill”). The base gave special permission for attendees to ride through the base which gave them a unique opportunity to see the island from high above.
This year I had the opportunity to ride along with the participants (albeit from the back of a motor bike… I don’t cycle) and take some pictures. Below are some of the best.
